Brackets shown are for a single filer. FICA adds 6.2% Social Security on earnings up to $184,500 and 1.45% Medicare on all earned income, with an extra 0.9% Medicare surtax above $200,000. Because Social Security stops at the wage cap, the effective FICA rate falls as income rises — which is why the effective rate above climbs more slowly at the top of the table.
Average vs median salary in the USA
Median usual weekly earnings for full-time wage and salary workers were $1,204 in 2025 — about $62,608 a year. Quarterly figures for the fourth quarter of 2025 were not published because the federal shutdown limited data collection, so the 2025 annual average is the most recent reliable reading. Average earnings run well above the median because a relatively small number of very high earners pull the mean upward, so the median is the better guide to typical pay.
